1. Make-up work turned in? Have you checked Aeries to ensure all work for your absence is recorded? Please report any discrepancies by Monday if a change is needed!
2. Review Adverb questions: how? when? where? to what extent?  Work on review activity of the difference between words that could be identified on our preposition list or that could be an adverb that answers “Where?”. Remember, a preposition has to have an object (noun/pronoun) that follows it. An adverb will not have an object and just describe the verb. See page 12 for info and examples and complete page 13 of the Adverb packet with me.
3. Review precision of MLA format for citations. Review types of literary devices: simile, metaphor, personification, onomatopoeia, and idioms.  Record minimally 2 per chapter of Charlotte Doyle for an average grade.
4. Read Charlotte Doyle chapter 7. Share literary devices found and edit our responses for precise format!

• Review Cornell notes (We’ve been doing so since prior to winter vacation!) for our final.
• Final Exam Semester One Info (Originally, this was distributed on January 12th.)
• Get a good night’s sleep, eat breakfast, bring many sharpened pencils and erasers, and be prepared for final!

• Study Cornell notes for final exam. After school language arts’ help is tomorrow! I’m available at the start of lunch anyday to help you!

2. View Adverb Packet pages 6-9. Discuss “Where” and “when” adverbs. Complete together.
3. Read Charlotte Doyle chapters 4-5.  Record similes, metaphors, personification, onomatopoeia, or personification. Minimum two per chapter for an average grade. Make sure you are using the format provided on pages 12-13 of the Charlotte Doyle packet. You need to be precise with the exact words, quotation marks, and parenthetical citation! See the examples! Underline items being compared or that display the identified figurative language device!

Homework:

• Review Adverb pages 7-9 and finish if needed.  Work hard to identify all subjects, helping verbs, main verbs and then adverbs. You do not need to write the sentence out as the example modeled. We did that verbally together in class. Make sure you know what parts of speech adverbs describe/modify and the three questions covered: How? When? Where?
• Study Cornell Notes for final. Refer back to final exam information handout!

1. Locate previous six weeks’ Cornell notes. If you have lost first, second, or third six week notes, reprint them using the semester review tab on top of the blog. The answer keys are there!
2. Check conjunction and interjection worksheets. How well did you do locating all of the verb phrases on the interjection sheet? Take your time on short worksheets to be precise and showcase what you have learned!
3. Receive Adverb Packet. Read and complete pages 0-4 together.  Fill in Cornell notes for the adverb questions! Adverb Packet pages 0-5
4. Look at Charlotte Doyle packet pages 12 and 13. Beginning chapter 5, you will be recording literary elements of simile, metaphor, personification, idiom, and onomatopoeia. We will also be working to properly cite these in MLA parenthetical format. Minimum requirement is 2 per chapter, but that will result in an average score. Challenge yourself to locate these elements and be precise in your recording.
5. Read chapter 4 and part of chapter 5.  Share literary elements and summarize plot so far.  What clues have we previously missed foreshadowing what Zachariah has shared about Captain Jaggery?

Homework:

• Study Cornell Notes and check out the review games on the blog! We will not have a full day of review for our final because we have done so for the six week and twelve week tests.  We’ve been reviewing concepts all of this six weeks (plot, characterization, theme, parts of speech, etc). Review your Cornell notes especially for this six weeks.
• Reading log signature

1. Review Cornell note answers together and stamp for credit.
2. Take linking verb versus action verb quiz.
3. Read remainder of chapter 3 of Charlotte Doyle and begin chapter 4.

3. Work on Verb Info pages 12-14 together. There are only 11 other linking verbs other than “to be”. Practice how to identify if those verbs are acting as action or linking.
4. Time for Cornell note completion and study. Those who did not complete the December 14th Cornell notes for literature or writing, I am disappointed! Those of you that completed them, I am proud of you! We spoke prior to the Olvera Street field trip, and the notes were available the day prior to the trip, the day of (on the blog), and you were reminded the day upon return. You were also reminded on January 3rd! Make sure that when you miss class and your teacher is giving you a flexible deadline, you don’t disappoint her!

Homework: Finish Cornell notes for grammar 1-20.  Be ready for a linking versus action verb quiz. It will be similar to the last questions on the first grammar page of notes.  Extra copies of notes are available on the “Cornell Note” or “Review” tab!

1. Check answers to Verb page 10. Review helping verbs.
2. Take Verb Test (4 repeat questions from Verb Page 7 and listing of the helping verbs just like our Wednesday’s pretest).
3. Finish reading Charlotte Doyle chapters 2-3. Answer the questions on page 9 and page 11.

• Extra Credit Opportunity Extension= originally distributed on December 15th and due on January 13th = may be submitted NO later than Tuesday, January 17th Extra Credit Writing
• Final Exam on January 26th or 27th: 100 multiple choice questions approximately. Study your Cornell Notes for Literature, Grammar, and Writing for the first, second, and third six weeks. You should be pretty prepared since we have had six week review tests! Review for 5-10 minutes a night!
• Obtain reading log signature and log onto Aeries to check your individual grade and comment entries

1. Carefully remove last night’s verb homework (page 9) from your verb packet. Turn it in to me.  If absent, place it on your planner upon return or in the silver metal tray on my desk.
2. Review helping verbs and expectation for quiz on block day. I will choose four sentences from our Verb pages 7 or 8. Students will need to cross off the prep phrases, single underline the subject, and double underline the verb phrase.  The second part of the quiz will be writing down of the helping verbs. Students did a pre-test of this in their composition notebook today.
3. Read remainder of Charlotte Doyle Chapter 1 and Chapter 2.  Answer the questions for chapter two on page 9 of your Charlotte Doyle packet in complete sentences for a small writing score (not just a homework score).

Homework:

• Verb Work Page 10: follow all directions except labeling of direct objects. Direct object labeling is an optional activity of differntiation for students that are ready for it!
• Finish answering Charlottte Doyle questions on page 9. If you would like to check out your own copy of our book, you can do so at the library. It is not necessary, but some students feel reassured having the book at home.

2. Discuss direct objects as a challenge point. Differentiated work is to label direct objects on tonight’s homework. Complete page 9 very carefully as it may be collected.
3. Read Charlotte Doyle chapter one and focus on indirect characterization of Charlotte. Authors give personality trait clues through a character’s speech, thoughts, effect on others, actions, and looks (STEAL). Watch especially for her effect on others (Mr. Grummage, the porter, the chaperone).

Homework:

• Complete Verb Packet Page 9 thoughtfully. Cross off prep phrases, single underline subjects, and double underline the verb phrases. As a differentiated opportunity, mark direct objects as an option. A direct object receives the action of an action verb. Example: I gave the ball to the monkey. (The ball is receiving the action of being given= direct object  to whom? the monkey = indirect object) This is a 10 minute assignment

• Memorize the helping verb list.  These verbs may help the main verb or even sometimes be the main action or linking verb.  If you participate actively in class, you won’t feel like it is memorization because you will understand the forms of the verbs “to do”, “to be”, “to have”.  I will supply the subject pronouns so that you can give the forms, but you will have to memorize the conditional verbs: may, might, must, could, would, should, shall, will, can. This is a 10 minute assignment. helping verbs

4. Read True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle chapter one. Look carefully at characterization of Charlotte and mention of Captain Jaggery.  What is Charlotte’s effect on others? What is Captain Jaggery’s effect on others?

Homework:

• Complete verb packet page 8. Follow all four directions: mark prep phrases, single underline subjects, double underline entire verb phrase (helping verb(s) and main verb), and write helping verb(s)  and main verb(s) on line. This is a 10 to 15 minute assignment. In order to earn credit, directions must be followed. Take your time and be precise! Use your helping verb or prepositional phrase page to help you!
• Memorize the helping verb list from your verb packet page 5.  I will provide the subject pronouns, but you must be able to give the present and past tense forms of “to be”, “to have”, “to do” and the conditional list of 3 M’s (may, might, must), 3 rhyming conditions (should, would, could), and the 3 future tense conditions (shall, will, can). We will quiz over this list of 22 helping verbs on block day!
