<li>Make-up work turned in? Have you checked Aeries to ensure all work for your absence is recorded? Please report any discrepancies by Monday if a change is needed!</li>
<li>Review Adverb questions: how? when? where? to what extent?  Work on review activity of the difference between words that could be identified on our preposition list or that could be an adverb that answers &#8220;Where?&#8221;. Remember, a preposition has to have an object (noun/pronoun) that follows it. An adverb will not have an object and just describe the verb. See page 12 for info and examples and complete page 13 of the Adverb packet with me.</li>
<li>Review precision of MLA format for citations. Review types of literary devices: simile, metaphor, personification, onomatopoeia, and idioms.  Record minimally 2 per chapter of Charlotte Doyle for an average grade.</li>
<li>Read <em>Charlotte Doyle</em> chapter 7. Share literary devices found and edit our responses for precise format!</li>
</ol>

<li>Check conjunction and interjection worksheets. How well did you do locating all of the verb phrases on the interjection sheet? Take your time on short worksheets to be precise and showcase what you have learned!</li>
<li>Receive Adverb Packet. Read and complete pages 0-4 together.  Fill in Cornell notes for the adverb questions! <a href="http://acochren.files.wordpress.com/2012/01/adverb-packet-pages-0-5.pdf">Adverb Packet pages 0-5</a></li>
<li>Look at Charlotte Doyle packet pages 12 and 13. Beginning chapter 5, you will be recording literary elements of simile, metaphor, personification, idiom, and onomatopoeia. We will also be working to properly cite these in MLA parenthetical format. Minimum requirement is 2 per chapter, but that will result in an average score. Challenge yourself to locate these elements and be precise in your recording.</li>
<li>Read chapter 4 and part of chapter 5.  Share literary elements and summarize plot so far.  What clues have we previously missed foreshadowing what Zachariah has shared about Captain Jaggery?</li>

<li>Work on Verb Info pages 12-14 together. There are only 11 other linking verbs other than &#8220;to be&#8221;. Practice how to identify if those verbs are acting as action or linking.</li>
<li>Time for Cornell note completion and study. Those who did not complete the December 14th Cornell notes for literature or writing, I am disappointed! Those of you that completed them, I am proud of you! We spoke prior to the Olvera Street field trip, and the notes were available the day prior to the trip, the day of (on the blog), and you were reminded the day upon return. You were also reminded on January 3rd! Make sure that when you miss class and your teacher is giving you a flexible deadline, you don&#8217;t disappoint her!</li>
</ol>
<p><strong>Homework:</strong> Finish Cornell notes for grammar 1-20.  Be ready for a linking versus action verb quiz. It will be similar to the last questions on the first grammar page of notes.  Extra copies of notes are available on the &#8220;Cornell Note&#8221; or &#8220;Review&#8221; tab!</p>

<li>Carefully remove last night&#8217;s verb homework (page 9) from your verb packet. Turn it in to me.  If absent, place it on your planner upon return or in the silver metal tray on my desk.</li>
<li>Review helping verbs and expectation for quiz on block day. I will choose four sentences from our Verb pages 7 or 8. Students will need to cross off the prep phrases, single underline the subject, and double underline the verb phrase.  The second part of the quiz will be writing down of the helping verbs. Students did a pre-test of this in their composition notebook today.</li>
<li>Read remainder of Charlotte Doyle Chapter 1 and Chapter 2.  Answer the questions for chapter two on page 9 of your Charlotte Doyle packet in complete sentences for a small writing score (not just a homework score).</li>
</ol>
<p><strong>Homework:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Verb Work Page 10: follow all directions except labeling of direct objects. Direct object labeling is an optional activity of differntiation for students that are ready for it!</li>
<li>Finish answering Charlottte Doyle questions on page 9. If you would like to check out your own copy of our book, you can do so at the library. It is not necessary, but some students feel reassured having the book at home.</li>

Authors give personality trait clues through a character&#8217;s speech, thoughts, effect on others, actions, and looks (STEAL). Watch especially for her effect on others (Mr. Grummage, the porter, the chaperone).</li>

<p><strong>Homework:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Complete Verb Packet Page 9 thoughtfully. Cross off prep phrases, single underline subjects, and double underline the verb phrases. As a differentiated opportunity, mark direct objects as an option. A direct object receives the action of an action verb. Example: I gave the ball to the monkey. (The ball is receiving the action of being given= direct object  to whom? the monkey = indirect object) <strong>This is a 10 minute assignment</strong></li>
